Noticing

/323 - Mapping the Sounds

I can really feel the winter in the air.

Spent some more time with the iPad, etc today and pretty much confirmed the issue the the Twister was that it was trying to draw too much power. A high-current usb battery is en route to confirm, and it should also allow me to integrate norns. After so long of guitar straight into amp it's been really fun using these things for loops and processing. Also a great reminder that Spacecraft is wonderful. These sounds are mostly noodling while setting up channels and midi controls, testing and tweaking, listening and staring off into space.

It was a lazy weekend and I enjoyed it, even if I sh/coulda gotten more things done. Oh well.

/322 - Diversion and Refocus

I was poking around a few sample players this morning and mentioned it to a friend who said “if this conversation was reversed you would tell me about some awesome app I should try first.” YES. Rigged up this all-battery setup and found a lot of possibilities within things I already had. The only issue here is that my battery (under the ipad) doesn’t seem to provide quite enough power as the Twister keeps rebooting. I’d also like to add my norns but there’s another power issue I’d need to solve. Still — all a lot less expensive that a hardware sampler. It’s good to bounce ideas around.

(ps — it really seems like the camera in my iphone is getting so bad. Really trying not to upgrade, but having a good camera in my pocket is important. :/ )

/076 - Communication

I’ve had an old M-Audio Uno midi interface for ages and it’s always worked great. Last week, a light bulb went on in my head that I could get another and use them together to get usb hosts (computer, ipad, norns) to talk midi to each other. It is extra wiring (there are a few specific solutions out there for this) but it works! Had a lot of fun with this tonight and am pretty excited that these things are now able to pass signals back and forth.

/044 - Mondaze

Pictures from my usual Monday morning visit to the park.

Evening sounds from Continua and Phyllis.

/035 - Otis

Family came over to visit today so we didn’t venture too far. It snowed a bunch so that was nice. I’m hoping it sticks around. The world always feels quieter under snow.

Had an early morning play with Audio Damage Quanta using the recording of the singing ice for granular processing, layered with sine waves. Running into Otis on norns for lfo-triggered sampling/delay/looping.

/014 - More Tape

Morning drone tape experiments — guitar > avalanche run > MLR on norns. 6 tracks split between 2 buffers. Playing over that a bit with a Hohner Pianet soundfont running on the ipad. Recorded out to cassette and then back into norns. Getting the levels set is still challenging, but the tape quality definitely comes through. I do need to open it back up to adjust the speed because playing back with the recording was definitely out of tune.

/008 - SoundBow

Spent the morning with one of my favorite iPad apps — Soundbow. It’s: buggy, midi out doesn’t always work, and doesn’t run in the background. It’s also: beautiful and meditative and capable of generative wonders. I should send this to Fennesz for a finishing touch. Haha

We went to get our Christmas tree in the afternoon, and of course I came back with pictures of shape, contrast, and texture instead of pictures of people or trees. All in all a pretty great Sunday.
