Noticing

/368 - Long Time No See

A few random pictures from the last week. I’ve tried posting a few times about my reflections on the year that was, but I’m not sure there’s been enough separation yet. Either way, it feels weird to be without it and absolutely insane that an entire year went by. 2020 was…

Have been playing with the modular a lot (and enjoying playing for an extra 30-45min than cutting it short to post on the blog) and tonight was pretty fun/cool. Playing a few drone samples, using Kria to sequence the v/oct input on microcell, using Pams to clock with a bunch of feedback patching to produce bursts of notes. Sort of reminded me of the late stages of a raga when the tablas go completely nuts. I was lucky enough to see Maestro Swapan Chaudhuri play live (with Ken Zuckerman at Eastman School of Music) once many years ago and my mouth hung open for a lot of it.

/353 - Quantize It

There’s still a lot to learn, but Pamela’s New Workout is pretty damn amazing. Here she’s triggering 2 granular samples, as well as 2 quantized guitar loops. There are some notes in there that don’t feel right (even if they’re actually “correct”), but the possibilities are pretty amazing. Definitely a reason I see this in so many racks.

/221 - Quence

Wonderful little surprise tonight in finding this script I somehow missed. I watched about a minute of the demo and glanced at the docs and just went for it, recording straight to disc inside norns. It amazes me the instruments this community creates and then gives away for all to share.

/183 - Samples of Model:Samples

This is very much out of the ordinary for my musical practice! I do so much unquantized/layered/looped that deliberately setting steps and locks is quite the challenge. Luckily for me Elektron has chance and trid conditions to let me feel more at home. Promise I’ll stay on grid next time.

/061 - Put It All Together

Tried out a few ideas tonight. Sampling guitar and playing it back chromatically with midi, then modulating the start/stop points and putting the whole mess through a dual delay algorithm. I don’t typically use so many elements at once but tonight it happened organically and I’m happy with the way it turned out.

/052 - Cat Dad

Morning sounds: Sampled and resampled ukulele, sequenced and time-stretched.

And all the while I have this guy just sleeping away behind me. He spends most of every day there in that chair, except when the birds are really active at the feeders. Nice to have a quiet office mate.

/008 - SoundBow

Spent the morning with one of my favorite iPad apps — Soundbow. It’s: buggy, midi out doesn’t always work, and doesn’t run in the background. It’s also: beautiful and meditative and capable of generative wonders. I should send this to Fennesz for a finishing touch. Haha

We went to get our Christmas tree in the afternoon, and of course I came back with pictures of shape, contrast, and texture instead of pictures of people or trees. All in all a pretty great Sunday.
