Noticing

/350 - Follower, Following Softly

Long recording tonight. A new module (Sewastopol) arrived today, meant to be the interface which allows me to use my guitar with the modular. It was supplanted somewhat by the realization that Axo can send a hot enough signal to get a clean recording in the bitbox, but it still has some cool extra functions I spent time exploring. This is guitar and samples triggering and modulating other samples into (too much?) granular and reverb. Was going to cut the clip down, but figured I’d just let it rip.

/314 - Walkabout

It was a beautiful day so Emily and I went for a walk at a nearby nature park with our cameras. Since she got it yesterday she’s been carrying it everywhere, snapping away happily. Since Ash recently got some film back it lit a fire under me to finish a few rolls I have in cameras. She got me the Sprocket Rocket about 6 years ago and it’s got the same roll in it from then. Finished it! It’s not going to be cheap to develop (panoramic and sprocket holes) so I hope that something turns out. I really need to be less precious about the things I shoot on film so it doesn’t take so long to finish a roll. (only a few more shots left on that roll of ?? inside the OM-1n)

/313 - Big Little One

Ash got a bunch of old film scans back today and this was in there. Love this kid so much. Happy birthday to the one who makes me laugh the most! ♥

Was cleaning out recent recordings and found this. Have really been enjoying #just playing guitar, but also missing processing and what comes of it.

/295 - A Good Project Day

The jazzmaster template is scaled correctly, which means the annodized aluminum panel I have is big enough to cut the guard from!

Ash’s marketplace skills paid off big time with this lot of 60 rolls of expired Kodak Max 400 — all for $10!. It’s not the most special film, but it should keep us set for snapshots for a very very long time.

I tried to desolder the oleds but they just wouldn’t budge and I didn’t want to destroy them. Decided it was easier to just cut a new board on the cnc and it turned out very nice. It’s really hard when the pitch is this small (for example, look how spacious that through-hole destined board is) but this works. I really need to work out a better process to get from layout (via DIYLC) to a file the machine can cut. Then I need to work out a better process for leveling and engraving. Always more to learn.

/203 - More Projects, Of Course

A few years ago, my uncle gave us a HUGE box of old slides and a projector. He said he wasn’t sure where they came from (something he found after his parents passed) but they aren’t of our family, though there are lots of local pics and what I assume are vacation pics. Most of the dates I’ve seen on them are 50’s and 60’s.

Emi and I were organizing in the basement yesterday and found them and she demanded to set things up to look through things. It all worked great until it stopped advancing slides and I’ve come to find out that there are plastic pieces in there that disintegrate over time. We were both really disappointed since there’s no way to change slides until it gets fixed, so I guess I’ll be digging into this very soon. haha

/157 - Film Walking

Stared at my film cameras for awhile today. The labs are closed due to the pandemic, but I’d still really like to get back out shooting soon. It’s also been a really long time since I did a city walk — I am always so much more engaged in shooting in that environment. So many interesting things to see.

/050 - Hazy

Got some serious BoC vibes going on over here tonight.

50 days straight? Crazy.

/045 - Film

Top 2: Maine, September 2019. Lomo 400 film shot with an Olympus 35RC

Bottom 4: Home, Autumn 2019. Very expired Kodak slide film, also on the 35RC

The day when your scans come back is so so great. I love the non-immediate nature of shooting film, and the sense that you can’t worry about it too much. Shooting digital (with anything except my phone) I always used to worry about it too much. Anyway. It has been a really long time since I had anything developed and I want to try to have shooting film be a more regular occurrence again.
