Noticing

/334 - Something New

My first eurorack case arrived today. No modules until next week, so have to keep myself occupied in the meantime with making samples for the bitbox. Tonight: minimal Kria atmospheres.

I read about some unfortunate things that happened with Synthrotek, so I’ve updated the picture with the power panel flipped. Glad I bought this used. No support for people who say things like that.

/330 - Home Again

There was a time that when asked what instrument I played I would say “Ableton.” Every project began and ended in it (finishes or not) and it felt so comfortable to use. It could do anything. I still think it can, but I can’t because I’ve gotten away from using it. My process has evolved into being only live (or live sequenced) improvisation recorded direct to a stereo master track. Production has never been my strong suit, but lately I have been thinking that maybe I should try again/try it differently. At the very least I’ll get some good loops out of it. Dusted off the material from one of the group collabs and had a go. New mindsets are tough!

/227 - Okta Collab

Uploaded my samples for another collab today. I’ve been a member at ILF for a very long time and have done a few group projects there over the years. It’s usually very fun, and definitely interesting to hear the wildly divergent results. Was going to put the wav files up for download, but apparently I have a 20mb limit per post. If anyone wants them, send me a message and I’d be glad to share.

/181 - Oontz Oontz

Last weekend I watched a documentary on the birth of Chicago house and thought it would be cool to have a drum machine with a hands-on interface. I listened to minimal techno all week and made it to Wednesday before I ordered the Model:Samples. It arrived today and I only had about an hour with it — seems like it will be very fun once I get my own samples into it and stop accidentally erasing all my sequences. Haha

/180 - All is Aum

Had a first go at playing with the collab samples. Pitched and layered and granularized just for fun. In the spirit of experimentation, I’d like to to try arrange things more than just letting things loop and drone, but tonight it just sounds very me. Haha

/163 - Samples

Seems as though both collab project are going to happen. Same premise with different groups of people — everyone record a bunch of samples (of anything) to share, then everyone makes a track with that sample pool as the only source material — effected/mangled however we want. I have done a few of these before and it’s always so interesting to hear how different each track ends up given they start from the same seeds.

Played around with the weird and wonderful conform as a first go. I don’t use a lot of percussion, but when I do I always gravitate towards clicks and pops. Conform is like a step sequencer without any meaningful control, which results in lot of happy accidents. Fun!

/136 - Sea of Cs

In all the time I’ve had the Digitone, I never tried using it to sequence other instruments. Last night I tried it with the norns timber engine and got some lovely results. Took some samples of a few of the instruments we have floating around here as fodder for continued experiments…

/061 - Put It All Together

Tried out a few ideas tonight. Sampling guitar and playing it back chromatically with midi, then modulating the start/stop points and putting the whole mess through a dual delay algorithm. I don’t typically use so many elements at once but tonight it happened organically and I’m happy with the way it turned out.
