Noticing

/352 - Reorg

Moved the desk around to get better access to norns and grid when working with the modular. Things are definitely in a shake up as I learn how all these wires work and fumble towards getting things to work together as a cohesive system. It’s really lucky for my 3 readers that I didn’t start the modular system earlier in the year! haha

/233 - Knock It Out

I didn’t jinx myself yesterday and look what happened — project complete. I modified the design because I realized that the model I posted yesterday would have problems with lateral stability. It’s a simple set of parts, but still pretty proud of how it turned out. There is a bit of roughness on one side of the cuts due to my endmill just barely reaching to finish the cut, so I’ll have to look for something longer for future jobs. I tried to take a picture of it on the desk, but it’s not the easiest thing to see. Fits/works great!

/232 - Desking

The new midi setup is working very well. Routing changes are easily made then I don’t need to think about it anymore — it just works. Ergonomically, I need a small riser stand to angle the iPad and/or Model:Samples on the desktop. Took a few measurements and then drew this in Sketchup — will try to cut it on the cnc sometime this week.

(I was going to say “tomorrow” but you know how it goes.)

/072 - Finally

For all the buildup… here’s a dark picture where you can’t even really see it.

I got impatient and it still had a few tacky spots when I brought it up this morning. I don’t notice any paint smell and have had no complaints from my darling bloodhound wife, so I think I’m good. Pretty happy with the layout. It gets the mixer, etc. up and angled, leaving room for cables and a few small things underneath. Now I just need to make some sounds.

Also, some tofu I made for Emi. It’s her favorite.

/070 - Snow Day

Emi and I had a great snowy Friday.

I woke up to silence and complete darkness at 2:00am. No power. We got a mix of snow and ice yesterday and it must have been too much weight for the wires. Power came back on around 5:30 and I was very thankful to be able to make coffee.

We got about another foot on top of what we had yesterday. Emi and I watched a movie and played with basically every type of builder (magnet tiles, legos, lincoln logs) toy we have. Went outside to shovel the walk and clear the end of the driveway while she romped around. It wasn’t the right kind of snow for snowballs.

Post bedtime I finished cutting and assembling the parts for the riser shelf. It’s currently in the 20° garage with its first coat of paint. Drying might take awhile.

/069 - Half and Half

Got partway through norns study 3 this morning (I still don’t get it) and got the legs for the desk shelf cut tonight. One hard thing about blogging every day is the feeling that everything has to be finished in a single go so there’s something to share. I need to keep focused on progress and the process. As gratifying as it is to finish a project and have it turn out well, it’s during the making that I’m usually having the most fun.

/068 - Material

I need a little more space and better wire management on my desk so I designed a small riser shelf today. Didn’t have time to build it, but went to grab materials so I can try to make it happen tomorrow.

/021 - Overload

Rewired the desk tonight. For the past few weeks I’ve been enjoying a pretty empty workspace, just bringing out what I feel like using and then putting it away when done. It’s been great for focus. Played around with a lot tonight and nothing really worked out. Too much on the desk. More is not more.
