Noticing

/301 - Infinity

Morning sounds playing the JM into a sequenced looper and effects, with a pulsing accompaniment by Continua. It has been awhile since I’ve played with effects and processing so it felt really good to quiet along with this.

This afternoon the ladies and I went to a nearby park to have a picnic and then walk along the shore of Lake Ontario. I know that Canada isn’t that far out of sight, but there’s still a really deep feeling when looking out over such an immense body of water softly swaying. Really reminds you how small you are.

We tried to go out to a few parks for a walk this afternoon and they were all PACKED. Full parking lots and people everywhere not distancing at all. Very sad that people are choosing to ignore everything that’s going on. We ended up at the wooded area close by our house and took a short walk despite there being some people there too. It was nice getting outside to enjoy the spring for a little while.

Floaty morning sounds from kria pushing 4 tracks on the digitone, running through granular and reverse delay pedals. I could probably use only this forever and not run out of possibilities. But I won’t, haha.

/092 - Out and About

We took Emily to Build-A-Bear at the mall tonight and I brought the recorder. The giant center fountain never seems to be on anymore, though I don’t go there very often. Growing up it was always “the place” and we would all pile in the car to road trip up here to buy music and comics. I did record at a smaller fountain but there’s no cleaning the noise out of it. A giant reverberant room full of people with splashing water in the center makes for a wall of sound. Decided to post the recording anyway.

Besides the long wait in line, Emily had a great time. Afterwards we all got veggie burgers and took a ride on the carousel.

My typical daily creative time is first thing in the morning before anyone else gets up, but on Mondays I have to travel 2 hours for work so that time isn’t available. The last 2 weeks I have made a point to stop along the way at Taughannock Falls to make field recordings and take a few pictures. It’s nice at that time because there really isn’t anyone else around, even if my recordings aren’t turning out that great. I still enjoy the short time I am able to be there. This week I also brought my Lomo Sprocket Rocket so hopefully I can finish the roll and get back some interesting photos soon.

/005 - Dark Water

Shot this video on my iPhone on my way to work Tuesday. We had a heavy winter storm the day before and the lake was very moody. Made a few field recordings (used the other adapter I mentioned and it worked much better, but it’s still rather fiddly) but they didn’t turn out well due to heavy wind blowing the mic out. Watching this reminded me of some old sounds I made which always felt to me like treading water in the middle of the ocean. Tried my hand at editing them together with iMovie, and although I’m not quite happy with the quality and the fades, I’m pretty amazed at the tools we have bouncing around in our pockets.
